Cerebral palsy may have numerous causes and it may be inherited as well as developed.

Among the prenatal (those occurring prior to birth) causes of Cerebral palsy there are:

  • Rubella

  • Taxoplasomosis

  • CMV - cytomegalovirus

  • Intracerberal hemorrhage


Also the use of cocaine, alcohol or tobacco in pregnancy increases the risk for Cerebral palsy.


The postnatal causes of Cerebral palsy include:
  • Neurologic injury sustained after birth

  • Incompatibility between blood types of the mother and her child which may result in anemia. Then anemia may lead to jaundice which causes Cerebral palsy.

  • Seizure disorder

  • Encephalitis and meningitis (infections affecting the brain) may cause Cerebral palsy

  • Physical trauma to a child

  • Near drowning/suffocation
